Tribute & Message From The Family

Robert J. Biggins, 61 of Hanson, Past President of the National Funeral Directors Association, entered into Eternal Rest on March 29, 2018 at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, Florida, surrounded by family. Bob was born in Worcester, MA, son of Thomas J. Biggins, Jr., and the Late Eleanor (Wasgatt) Biggins.

Bob was a graduate of Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester with the Class of 1975 and of the New England Institute of Funeral Services (now Mt. Ida College) in Newton in 1977.

At a young age, Bob was inspired to become a funeral director upon witnessing firsthand the impact of the care his family received during the bereavement of his grandmother. He knew then that caring for families in their moment of greatest need was his mission, and he made this calling his life's work.

In 1986, he moved to Hanson and soon thereafter acquired the Magoun Funeral Home in nearby Rockland. Bob, along with his wife Christine, son Dan, and many supportive colleagues and staff grew Magoun-Biggins to proudly serve thousands of local families during their darkest times. Bob always felt blessed to help the grieving 'celebrate the dignity of life' with both joy and sorrow as they said goodbye to their loved ones.

In 2002, Bob was elected to serve as President of the National Funeral Directors Association. Bob was both honored and humbled to make this contribution to the profession, and was inspired by the funeral director colleagues (many of whom became cherished family friends) he met throughout his many travels in support of their shared mission.

Bob was a faith-filled and loving companion to his wife Christine throughout her 11-year battle with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer. They confronted her prognosis together with love, toughness, and prayer and when she passed in 2015 were as in-love after 37 years of marriage as when they first met as high school sweethearts.

Bob was engaged to wed Donna Haggett in September 2018. Together they enjoyed family, friends and travel, and cherished their time together.

Bob is predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Christine Biggins, and their late infant son Robert J. Biggins, Jr. He is survived by his fiancé Donna Haggett of Hull, and was the loving father of Daniel J. Biggins and his wife Danielle of Rockland, Erin K. Russo and her husband Michael of Loganville, GA, and Andrew J. Biggins of Los Angeles, CA. He was the proud "Papa" to his five grandsons, Gavan D. Biggins, Logan W. Russo, Ronan D. Biggins, Landon R. Russo, and Shea D. Biggins.

He is survived by his father Thomas J. Biggins, Jr and his wife Doris of Toms River, NJ. One of 6 children, Bob is predeceased by his sister Mary Taft (Don) of Mt. Horeb, WI and is survived by Thomas J. Biggins III (Donna) of Sudbury, MA, Daniel J. Biggins (Lynn) of Worcester, MA, Ann M. Hulette (Randy) of Falls Church, VA, and Joseph M. Biggins (Kerrie) of Acton, MA. Also surviving are many beloved nieces and nephews.

The Biggins Family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate his life on Wednesday April 4, 2018 at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union Street, Rockland from 5:00–8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 5, 2018, in Holy Family Church in Rockland at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow at Holy Family Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Robert and Christine Biggins Courage Scholarship, c/o Rockland Trust Co., 288 Union St. Rockland MA 02370. I was so sorry to hear the news about your dad. Courtney shared with me that the mass and eulogy you offered was beautifully done. The first time I met your parents was in Chicago at his installation and will never forget how the hall was transformed into Fenway Park, it was amazing! I enjoyed talking with Bob more recently in Philadelphia and Washington, he loved sharing the encounter with your mom and Big Papi. What a great memory! Every time we see a bow tie we will all think of Bob Biggins. Take Care, Jason Fitzgibbons.

It is with shock and sadness that I heard of Bob's passing tonight. I had the pleasure of working in an administrative position for the Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association during Bob's tenure as President. His warmth, charm and caring for those he served will always remain foremost in my memory. Considering myself doubly lucky I also had the pleasure of practicing yoga with his late wife Christine and to share in the joy she found in that practice. My sincere condolences go out to Dan, Erin, Andrew and their families. To Donna Haggett I am so sorry for your loss. May he Rest In Peace.

To the entire Biggins Family our heartfelt condolences to you all. I have known Bob for many years and have and many great conversations with him and have enjoyed his company over the years. I am so glad I ran into him at the National Convention. He was one of the first people/colleague to reach out to me and support me 10 years ago when I held a memorial service for a family who lost their beloved German Shepherd. He also supported me when I introduced my grief therapy Golden Retriever Dog named Tucker into our company. I will never forget his great smile, warm personality and his great sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Bob was such a special man. When my dad, Mark Lelyveld, died in 2007, Bob went out of his way to make sure all Jewish laws were followed. When I lost it at the cemetery, Bob held me until I could breath again. I let him know how much his kindness was appreciated each time I saw him. He had a wonderful way of offering quiet sympathy to all those who suffered a loss. Hopefully, he knows just how much he was appreciated.

I served on the NFDA board with Bob. At my first board meeting, Bob was the newly elected president of NFDA. Katrina had just demolished New Orleans. Our next convention, one year hence, was scheduled for New Orleans. The board discussion concerned where we could move it based upon reports of the destruction. After several minutes of deliberation, Bob finally spoke. He stated that we are funeral directors. We help people through the most difficult times of their lives. This is the most tragic time for the folks of New Orleans. He proposed that we keep our date in New Orleans so that our convention can demonstrate support both financially and emotionally for these people. Because that is what we do everyday of our professional lives. Obviously he was impassioned and convinced us to withhold our decision until further evidence was secured to make s good decision. Those insightful words by Bob exemplified his concern and care of others and the heartful compassion he had for people.

I met Bob when his family moved to Worcester and he began attending Chandler Junior High School. We became friends and remained friends all through high school. We lost touch after that, but after many years I ran into him occasionally in his Hanson neighborhood. He was always the same: outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic person I first met in eighth grade. He was a good kid, a good man, and a good friend. I send my deepest condolences to the Biggins-Stiles families.

We had our 7 and 8 year old grandsons with us who were missing their families, and Bob and Chris were missing theirs. They were wonderful to the boys and we all had a great time. We enjoyed renewing that friendship at each meeting over the years. We bid Chris farewell a few years ago. And now, Bob, with a heavy heart we must bid you a fond farewell until we all meet again.

I am so deeply sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He truly was a great guy, committed to the ministry of caring for people at their most difficult and painful moments, doing all that he could to comfort and console them. I first met Bob back in 1991 when my grandfather, Ted Dennison, passed away unexpectedly. Both Bob and Bob Magoun came alongside of my family and proved to be such an incredible help and comfort. Knowing that my grandfather knew the both of them (he serviced the oil burners there at the funeral home for years), both Bob B and Bob M did everything to make it so personal and genuine. Over the years, as I've seen Bob at various calling hours or services, he always greeted me with a smile, handshake and showed a genuine interest in knowing how I was doing. Bob reached out to countless people; please know that countless people are standing with you - lifting your family before the Father in prayer and trusting in His peace and comfort to lift and sustain you during these difficult days. Thanks for your ministry, Bob, and for the authentic heart from which that ministry so freely flowed. You will be greatly missed!

Bob was one of the finest gentlemen with whom I have ever crossed paths. It only took a short time to go from a quick introduction to a deep friendship. Bob was like that.
In memory's ear I can still hear he and his friend Mark singing in the bass section of the NFDA choir during those dark autumn days in 2001. Their repetitive exclamation of "truth is marching," is symbolic of all that Bob was and stood for. Still is.
He was my friend, and I loved him.
Great will be the vacuum of his absence, but he saw to it that you could fill his shoes, Dan.
I think he looks down now, and smiles.
My prayers and condolences to all.

We were so saddened and shocked at Mr. Biggin's passing. He always told me to call him Bob because it made him feel old, so I will. Bob was a man who truly served others. His tragic passing reminds us of how precious life is and how important it is to leave a legacy of service, kindness, caring and humor. Bob leaves this legacy behind and will be remembered by all who knew him: those in the funeral industry, those in the community and most importantly, his family. To Dan and the entire Biggins family, we lift you up in prayer during this most difficult time and know that his legacy lives on in you and will be carried with you always. God Bless, With love from all of us at the Quealy Funeral Home.

My condolences to the Biggins Family. I, like many others are in shock. God took a loyal servant too soon and we all feel the loss. I met Bob and Christine at Doherty High School and we became close friends and shared many funny and interesting times growing up. Your Dad was a special person, a loyal friend, intelligent, quick witted, compassionate and loved your mom and all of you. I never had the pleasure of meeting Donna, but I saw the happiness in Bob's eyes and in every picture taken of the two of you. Bob was fortunate to meet two special women, enjoy a wonderful family, and travel doing what he loved. None of the comments of his community service surprise me, since he was always working towards a better whole, always giving of his time and resources. I will miss you old friend, but you will never be forgotten. Say hello to Chris, my family and give Badjo a hug for me. Until we meet again. May God provide comfort to your family, friends and Donna at this difficult time.

Being one of the Cantors at Holy Family, I frequently saw your Dad at funerals. He would always give me a quick smile as he so respectfully cared for the family and was a friend whenever we met outside of church. His sudden departure leaves everyone so shaken and truly broken-hearted. Please know that his mark on this life, town, families and friends, is so deeply rooted, that he will never be forgotten. I have found it paralyzing to consider what to say about the sudden death of my friend and colleague, Bob Biggins. My heart is aching for each member of Bob's family. What I am feeling right now is hard to put into words as I know it must be for each person that loved Bob. The experience of devastating loss has touched everyone about the unexpected death of this extraordinary man. Bob's was a life of service, love compassion, dedication, excellence, as well as a life of laughter, fun, heartbreak and endurance. Grief can be so hard, and I hope the special memories that each of us have of Bob will help us to cope. I hope that Bob's family will be comforted by the outpouring of love surrounding each of them at this most difficult time. The bond that Bob had with each of us was profound and will be everlasting. This is such a tragedy that none of us can believe it and this is just wrong. My thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy are with Bob's family, his community, his many friends in the Rockland area, and all of us in the death care profession that loved, respected and cared so much for this wonderful man. We all must be gentle with ourselves now because it's surprising how hard we can be on ourselves when grieving. When there's joy and happiness we all know what to do. But grief is a more private and lonely emotion. As I write this, I think of Bob & Chris and how much they loved each other for 37 years, and of Bob & Donna enjoying their new lives together. Dan & Danielle, Erin & Michael, Andrew and those five grandsons; you were the joy of his life. Bob was so special. We're all so lucky to have had Bob walk among us. Someone so special can never be forgotten. Remembering each of you and Bob today and always.

Dan, to you and yours, Erin, to you and yours, Andrew and to Donna,
Words cannot express our sadness and utter shock at the passing of your Dad, friend, Papa, and fiancé We have walked together on many of the same roads, some at the same time, some at different times, but always with inspiration, admiration and friendship. Faith in our loving merciful God is the biggest thing we shared with your parents Bob and Chris along with deep LOVE for our children and grandchildren.
We send all that we have to you at this time, our prayers, our love, our admiration to you all for the grace and dignity in which you will carry on their legacy and in how you will lay Bob to rest. So many, too many to count have great memories and stories of Bob as do we. THIS is the testament of how well He lived his life, better than most but not perfect. He is PERFECT now because God calls the best to Himself.
We will all try to bear the loss with the grace that he showed us. We pray that you all will continue to live life with half the zest that your dad and mom had. May Bob's deep love for you his family, guide your love for each other going forward Bigginsstrong! We will be with you in prayer today and each day as you lay him to rest. We know how hard this is for their children to lose both parents in such a short time but he has set an example for them to follow. Please children, stay close to Our Lord and He will help you get through the rough times that will come. You are all in our prayers and hearts and that includes you too Donna. Even though we have never met, we know you made Bob a very happy man. Words are so hard to find right now because this was so unexpected but just pray to Jesus to help you through the coming days. With all our love and sympathy. Liz and Kevin (Aunt Liz and Uncle Kevin)
