Tribute & Message From The Family

Robert Lawrence Craig ("Bob"), age 87 of Hanson, Massachusetts, passed away on July 1, 2020, just 11 days after the loss of his wife and following a long battle with cancer. He was born on May 26, 1933, to Lawrence Craig and Dorothea (Johnson) Craig in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Robert graduated from Rockland High School in 1950 and served in the Coast Guard reserves from 1951-1969. He married Kathleen Kenealy on October 31, 1952.

Robert spent over 50 years in the oil and gas heating industry working in sales, management, and customer service. Beginning as a driver in the family business, Craig and Johnson Oil Company, Robert worked at all levels of the industry, from field deliveries to company president. Always eager to learn more, he attended a number of vocational and trade schools for courses relevant to the industry, and even maintained his technician license through 2020. Robert spent most of his career at the Carlin Company, retiring in 2008.

Robert enjoyed sports throughout his life, beginning with the track team in high school. He even met his wife by throwing a football to her on a Rockland track in 1949. (Though she missed the ball, she caught the man.) He loved bowling as a member at Timber Lanes in Abington, and served on the board of the Hanson Athletics Association. His office shelves were full of Red Sox memorabilia and he could often be found watching a game from his chair in the living room. Most of all, Robert was an enthusiastic golfer, attending various tournaments with his late son, Michael; taking his great-granddaughter out to the golf course; and earning a PGA-recognized hole in one in 2014 at the Pembroke Country Club, where he was a member.

Robert's work in sales allowed him to indulge in his love for travel all over New England. He often paired business trips with opportunities to visit family, like taking his grandchildren out for dinner while they attended college in the Pioneer Valley. He especially enjoyed trips with his wife, Kathleen, often going on cruises, day trips, or camping together.

Family was extremely important to Robert and Kathleen. The Craig home was a gathering place for friends and family, where holidays and special occasions filled the house to the brim with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Robert also cared for his spiritual family as a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockland for over 50 years, where he also served as deacon and moderator.

Robert was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Craig, and his son, Michael Craig. He is survived by Michael's children Kerry (Craig) Sproles, Courtney (Craig) Bodendorf, Jeffrey Craig, and Christopher Craig; by his son William Craig and William's children Cassandra (Craig) Blake, Robert Craig, and Leanna (Craig) Chitty; and by his daughter, Susan (Craig) Walkins, and Susan's children Jaclyn Walkins, James Walkins, and Kimberly Walkins. Brother of , Jean (Craig) McNamara and John (Jack) Craig. He was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, July 10, 2020, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Magoun Biggins Funeral Home at 135 Union Street, Rockland, Massachusetts (781-878-1775). The funeral service will be held Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Rockland at 200 Union Street, Rockland, MA (781-878-1020), followed by interment at Spring Lake Cemetery, Prospect Street, Rockland, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cancer Society in memory of his son, Michael, and to St. Jude's Hospital.

God bless the extended Craig family. Another hard loss so close to Kay's passing. I referred to Kay as my other mother and I see Bob as another father. He treated me like family as well. He was my coach, confidant, counselor and a great friend throughout my life. A great role model that I looked up to. So glad you have rejoined Kay and Mike. Rest in eternal peace. You will be missed.

Bob Craig was a true giver. We have known Bob and Kay for over 50 years. Michael, Sue and Bill were students of ours at Rockland High School. Bob was a leader at First Baptist Church where we served together in many capacities. I shared his passion for golf which was often was a topic of discussion, especially when he had a great day. If something needed to be done at church he was the first person to volunteer. Bob was an outstanding christian gentleman and we will miss him greatly. Our deepest sympathy to Sue, Bill and family. We know Bob and Kay are together today again and we rejoice.
