Obituary for Johann B. Baum

February 8, 1936 - June 2, 2019
Rockland | Age 83

Johann B. (John) Baum 83, of Rockland, died Sunday evening after a period of failing health in the comfort of his own home. He was surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John was born on February 8, 1936 to the late Johann B. and Cecelia (Lauman) Baum. He was raised in Borghorst, Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1954 at the age of 18. His wife Reinhilde (Nille), also from Borghorst, Germany joined him in 1959 and they were soon married.

John is survived by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of fifty nine years, Reinhilde (van den Hof) Baum, his daughter Stephany and her husband Peter Woodward of Hanover, his son John and his wife Anarose (Helsper) Baum of Londonderry, New Hampshire and his daughter Robin and her husband Bob Gasdia of Rockland. John was a loving "Opa" to Christopher and Amy (Rotthar) Woodward of Hanson, Elizabeth (Woodward) and Andrew McInnes of Quincy, Ian, Cory, and Lea Baum of Londonderry, NH and Bobby, Brad and Bonnie Gasdia of Rockland. He was also "Opapa" to his four great grandchildren, Olivia, Hannah Dot, Frankie and Will. He was the brother to Julia (Baum) Brinkhaus, Mia (Fischer) Baum, Heinz Baum and the late Werner Baum.

John attended Franklin Pierce Institute before securing a job, as a tool and die maker, at Anderson Power Products in Brighton for more than 40 years. It was a job he loved and would often bring home to his family to explain the blueprints, measurements, and final model projects.

John enjoyed the simple things in life. He took great pride in his vegetable garden, growing a bumper crop of cherry tomatoes every summer for his whole family to enjoy!

However, John's greatest passion was soccer, a sport he excelled at from the time he was a young boy in Germany. As a young man he played with the Norwood Kickers for close to fifteen years. After moving to Rockland, he played for the Rockland Rowdies, an over 40 soccer team where he developed many life-long friendships. John, together with two of his soccer buddies founded the Rockland Youth Soccer program. He truly enjoyed coaching the youth of Rockland and he was his children and grandchildren's biggest fan.

The Baum family invites friends and loved ones to honor his wonderful life. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 14 at 9:00 am in The Holy family Church in Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dana Farber Hospital. John and his family are forever grateful for the wonderful care and support provided by so many special and impressive health care professionals.
