Obituary

Blanche Serafin was born into a Polish family in Salem Ma. She grew up in Salem on Essex St near the House of Seven Gables. As a young woman, Blanche loved to sail with friends in the harbor off the Salem Willows. She also liked to ski and would travel to the mountains of New Hampshire. Blanche loved adventure and travel. She spent a week on a windjammer in Maine and even traveled to Cuba in the 40's . Majoring in Education, she attained a BA from Salem State Teachers College. She was also quite the "fashionista" and attended John Robert Powers Modeling School in Boston and even taught classes in Comportment. She later took a break from the female dominated world of teaching and found more fun and challenge in the male dominated General Electric Jet Propulsion Lab in Lynn, Ma. where she worked on some of the calculations for development of the first jet engine.

Blanche met her husband Richard Serafin when he was singing in a Polish choir called "The Polonaise" in Boston. Dick was a graphic artist and had a keen interest in architecture. He was a graduate of Vesper George Art School in Boston.

They married in Salem on May 19, 1957, honeymooned in Bermuda, and shortly after, moved into a modern dream house in Rockland, Ma, custom designed and built by her husband, Dick. He was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright's designs at the time.

Blanche and Dick had 2 children, Mark and Marsha. With Blanche's love of the sea, Dick also got the sailing bug and the family took up sailing, eventually owning a 17 ft sailboat, and then trading up to a 23 footer named, "Seraphala II" ( Polish for angels on the waves). The Serafins have many fond memories of sailing in Hingham, Scituate, the North Shore and Cape Cod with their Yorkshire Terrier named "Muffin".

Blanche was a stay-at-home mom but on occasion worked part time outside the home. She has worked for Edgars Department Store in Brockton, Stewarts Clothing Store in Rockland and Lord & Taylor at Braintree Plaza. She later returned to substitute teaching in the Brockton Public Schools when her children went off to college and continued to do so into her early 80's!

Of Blanche's 2 children, Mark, is an electrical engineer and lives in Houston, TX, and Marsha, is an illustrator and nursery school teacher in NYC . She lives with her husband, Rob and two children, Hannah and Natalie. Blanche is known as "Babci" ( grandma in Polish), to her grandchildren.

"Miss Blanche's" favorite movie is Gone With The Wind. She loved anything to do with the "deep south", including Dixieland Jazz, she was a southern belle at heart. Her drink of choice, as you may have heard, is a Manhattan. Her best advice to you is "whoop it up while you can!"
