Obituary

Helen Jose Mencke passed peacefully in the comfort of her home after enjoying a wonderful life for 94 years. Those who knew and loved Helen marveled at her tenacity and determination to overcome the odds. Throughout the years, she battled cancer many times, broke numerous bones, and fought off a list of ailments that she refused to succumb to. During the weeks before her death, she continued to enjoy frequent visits with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Helen was married to Bill Mencke for forty-one years and they raised their two children, Carol and Billy, in Rockland. They owned Mencke's Jenny Service Station on Market Street and she pumped as much gas as her husband did, but her favorite job was working in the office at Amos A. Phelps Insurance Company. Helen and Bill enjoyed playing golf with their friends and were members of both the Rockland Golf Course and Pembroke Golf Course.
Helen was always ready for an adventure and was looking forward to another winter in Florida with all of her Super Bowl friends. She enjoyed her golfing trips to Bermuda, her annual trips to Ogunquit, and her vacations in Paris, London, and Rome. As recently as August, Helen renewed her passport- never giving up her plan to return to Paris!

She was the mother who had homemade cookies and milk waiting after school, dressed up to go trick-or-treating with the neighborhood kids, made her daughter's prom dresses, welcomed everyone into her home, cooked gourmet meals, created holiday traditions and nursed her son during his fight with cancer. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember her coffee frappes, her Christmas Danish pastries, her family recipes, her card games, her shared pu pu platters, and her hugs and kisses.
Helen loved being surrounded and worshipped by her family, whom she loved fiercely. She had a passion for life and was known for living it her way. As a result, she lived by the words in her son Bill's favorite song, "Live Like You Were Dying", and suggested that everyone else did as well!
Thankfully for her and those who loved her, Helen retained her sharp memory and quick wit. She enjoyed playing the card game Spite and Malice with visitors. And, with the use of her iPad, Helen continued to seriously challenge her Words with Friends opponents, read her cherished English mysteries, and text her friends and family. She listened to the recent political debates and Supreme Court confirmation proceedings and will certainly miss not knowing if the ballot she mailed last week helped her candidates win.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Pauline and Earl Jose; her husband Bill; her son Billy; her daughter Linda; and her brothers-in-law, Steve and Bob. She lived with her daughter Carol and her son-in-law Jack McGrath, whom she loved as a son. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jennifer and Peter Reardon; Melissa and Phil Barlit; Katie Mencke and fiancé Chris Low; Jeremy and Lori, Justin and Stacey, and Jordan Essigmann. At 94, Helen was also lucky to have great-grandchildren who always made her smile: Madison and Jackson Reardon; Lindsay Cormier; Emilia Parsons; Danica, Aubrey, Addison, and Aspyn Essigmann. Helen is survived by her sisters: Jean Himberg, and Barbara Perkins and her husband Neil; her sister-in-law, Ruth Szymkiewicz; her daughter-in-law, Denise Mencke Warren; and several nieces and nephews.

Due to the COVID pandemic, there will not be any calling hours. Memorial donations can be made to the Rockland Education Foundation, PO Box 764, Rockland, MA 02370.
