Obituary for Richard A. Spratley

October 10, 1935 - April 14, 2020
Hanover, Massachusetts | Age 84

Richard A. Spratley, born on October 10, 1935 died on April 14, 2020 of natural causes. He was the son of Edith (Selwood) and Henry Chester Spratley.

He was a graduate of Hingham High School, attended University of Rhode Island before joining the United States Marine Corps which was a point of deep pride for him. His career path was in the food service industry working for Valle's Steakhouse, Howard Johnson, the Seiler Corporation, and Sodexo. Upon his retirement he became the chef at home, causing friends to forget that his wife also knew how to cook. In her last letter to him, his granddaughter Olivia wrote, "I love the way you make corn." He excelled at outdoor grilling. He could be found at his grill on the coldest winter evening. Yet, he never mastered the art of a perfectly cooked prime rib or tenderloin roast. He loved being helpful and was masterful at the art of explaining things whether it was solicited or not. If someone was searching in a cabinet or drawer, he would always ask, "What are you looking for?"

His greatest love was his family. While not demonstrative, they always knew how proud he was of their various strengths and gifts. He looked forward to times when the whole gang would vacation together, particularly on the Cape. He also loved the New England Patriots. If it was a Sunday in the fall, we knew he would be wearing his lucky NE Patriots sweatshirt. He loved the game of golf and looked forward to playing in the Weymouth-Braintree Elks Monday Night Golf league, where he made some of his best friends. He always looked forward to annual golf outings on the Cape with friends over the years. He was a collector of many things: watches, cookbooks, golf equipment, and kitchen gadgets. Who knew there were so many types of spatulas, or coffee makers, or slow cookers? There were also at least a dozen sponges under the sink

He is survived by his wife Deborah (Morcom). He was pre-deceased by his son, Jason Scott in 2013. He is survived by his beloved daughter Kerry Sullivan (Kevin) and their children Jenna, Cailin and Ryan Sullivan. He is survived as well by his son's wife Heather Lawson-Bolton and their children Owen, Olivia, and Lucas Lawson-Spratley. His life was a human being who was full of love, and he will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be planned for a later date. Memorial Donations may be made to:
