Obituary for Robert S. Smith

October 11, 1930 - August 17, 2018
Hingham, Massachusetts | Age 87

Robert (Bob) S. Smith, 87, of Hanover passed away peacefully on Friday, August 17. He was born and raised in Weymouth, the only son of Roland and Dorothy (Simonds) Smith. Bob was a graduate of Weymouth High School in 1948 and went on to receive his bachelors degree from Northeastern University. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served in the Korean War until his discharge in 1955. He remained "Semper Fi" the rest of his life. When he returned from Korea, he received his master's degree in education from Boston University and began a teaching career in the Wellesley Public School System that spanned over four decades. Even after retirement he would volunteer teach his special science classes at schools around the South Shore.

Bob was a resident of Hanover, MA for over 50 years and a deeply devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Hanover. The Boy Scouts, Fellowship and The Merriweds were just a very few of his passions. Bob enjoyed spending endless time in his beautiful gardens growing dahlias, hosta and day lilies. He was a big fan of the New England Patriots but his true sports passion was the Boston Red Sox, their biggest fan. Anyone who met Bob Smith never forgot his infectious passion for learning, love, life and friendship. His family is saddened by his loss, but they are truly grateful for all the blessings he brought into their lives. He will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over fifty years, June (Gray) Smith. He was a devoted father of son Glenn Smith of Ft. Myers Beach, FL; daughter, Cheryl Goodrich and husband Benjamin of Duxbury, MA; and one granddaughter Ashley Dailey of Portsmouth, NH. He is also survived by his sister, Bettina Sonderegger of Cotuit, MA.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the First Congregational Church in Hanover. A private inturnment will follow the service in the Hanover Center Cemetery. The family will join family and friends at a Celebration of Life reception at Riley Hall across from the church following the burial. Donations in his memory may be made to Alzheimer's Association,
