John J. Shea 91, of Rockland, died peacefully on May 11, 2012. He was born, raised and educated in Boston, son of the late Gertrude (Smith) and Patrick Shea. John graduated from Dorchester High School in 1939.
Mr. Shea was a proud veteran of our country's armed services serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was also the Bandmaster of the 26th Division National Guard Band of Massachusetts John worked for 21 years at the Internal Revenue Service. John served as a professional assistant for many years at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home in Rockland bringing care and compassion to all he served.
Mr. Shea was a talented and acclaimed Professional Musician, and was a member of the Local #9/138 Musicians Union. John was the Professional Musicians Club of Massachusetts Musician of the year in 2000. He was the bandleader of "Shea's Military band," and "the John Shea Orchestra" which played every Wednesday and Saturday night at the Mosely's on the Charles Ballroom in Dedham for over 51 years.
John was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of MA. John was the Past President of the Rockland Chamber of Commerce and was a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rockland Rotary Club. He was also a member of Rockland Kiwanis, and the Friends of the Rockland Senior Citizens.
Husband of the late Anne T. (Slattery) Shea. Father of, Kevin J. Shea and Janice of Haverhill, Kathleen A Cronin and Timothy of Rockland, and John J. Shea Jr. and Michelle of Hanover. Brother of Virginia Briana of NH,the late Mary L. Sweeney, Patricia Loughman, and Gertrude V Carlson. Grandfather of Sean and Colleen Cronin, and Samantha Shea.Step Great-Grandfather of Ava,Addison and Ella Shea-Crossman and also loving Uncle of Marianne Hurley and Barbara McDowell and many other nieces and nephews. John is also survived by his special friend, Rita Webster of Abington.
The Shea family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate John's life at the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St. Rockland on Tuesday May 15, 2012 from 3:00-8:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday May 16, 2012 at 9:00 AM in the Holy Family Church in Rockland MA. Donations may be made to the John J.
